Reading Service Body is for “Show” and for Pleasure

    Company Name: Log Cabin Farms

Reading Products: Classic® Series Service Body

Type of Service: Restoration of Antique Heavy Equipment

Log Cabin Farm recently purchased a Reading Classic® Series Service Body, model LP108FABDW-99R, and had it mounted on an F350 Ford super duty diesel chassis.  The Classic® Series Service Body features weathertight exterior storage compartments and an open cargo area.  The body is uniquely being utilized primarily as a hobby and vacation vehicle.

C.E. Christian, a.k.a. “Junior,” owner, is in the unique business of collecting and restoring antique heavy equipment such as old steam shovels and bull dozers that date back from the early 1900’s.  There are only a handful of people around the world who are in this type of business, and that’s what makes it so unique.  Junior’s been in the antique line of heavy equipment for the last 50 years.  After restoring heavy equipment, Junior takes them to an antique show twice a year to show them off.  He also takes his Classic® Series Service Body filled with heavy equipment tools and hauls his 33 ft. bumper camper with it.  At the show, he can drive up to a piece of antique heavy equipment in his Reading body and perform repairs on-site.

As a result, Junior needs a dependable and efficient Reading service body to organize and carry tools, grease, oil, lubrication equipment, and other mechanical items in the spacious body compartments.  He fills up the cargo area with a barrel of antifreeze, a barrel of oil, an air compressor, and a pressure washer.  This allows him to be fully equipped to service antique heavy equipment at the show.

Junior uses an older truck to perform service work on bull dozers and back hoes at the farm since he specifically uses his Reading Classic® Series Service Body for his hobby and for pleasure.  He washes it often because he wants it to look sharp, and he gets a lot of compliments on it.  He also utilizes the Reading Classic® Series Service Body to haul his camper when he goes on vacation.  It was for that reason that he had a custom reinforced bumper built with ½ inch plate, ½ inch tubing, and a vise holder built in.

In addition, Junior customized his unit with a low profile design for improved driver rear visibility.  A custom gooseneck removable ball hitch was installed in the floor.  The front of the body and the top of the compartments were overlayed with tread plate for additional protection and walk over capability.  Stainless steel latches were added, adjustable cargo tie downs were installed in the bed to safely hold tools in place, and a custom receiver hitch was installed with D-rings.

According to Junior, he chose a Reading Classic® Series Service Body because “it looked pretty nice, and I have a good relationship with the distributor.  He was local, and he worked with me to meet my special needs.”  The Reading Classic® Series Service Body was purchased through K.E. Rose, an authorized Reading distributor, located in Huber Heights, OH.

Standard features include construction of two-sided A60 galvannealed steel and Lectro-Life® immersion priming for complete rust protection.  Other standard features include automotive-quality rotary locks for secure protection to tools and equipment; stainless steel bolt-on hinges keeping the compartment doors operating smoothly in all weather conditions; and double paneled compartment doors offering greater durability.

Reading Custom Service Body Adapts to Specific Needs

Company Name: Cleveland Brothers Eq. Co.

Reading Products: Reading Custom Service Body

    Type of Service: Caterpillar Sales/Service

Cleveland Brothers Eq. Co. recently purchased several Reading custom heavy duty service bodies, model HD134DW, to utilize as their service vehicles.  According to Tom Lang, Vice President of Product Support, they chose Reading because the company was very “adaptable, cooperative, eager to please them as a customer, and very responsive” to their specific needs for their industry.

Cleveland Brothers chose to have the custom service bodies mounted on Freightliner SL80s and had them customized in numerous ways.  Grip-N’Glide® drawers were added to the body compartments for convenient storage of tools and materials.  Grip-N’Glide® drawers offer a unique J-latch system which allows the user to grasp the J-latch to open and close the drawer with one hand.  Spring-loaded door holders were installed to keep the doors in an open position, and rubber fenderettes were installed on the wheel wells for extra strength and splash protection.  Stainless steel T-handle locks and masterlocking were also incorporated in the service body.  Reading’s spring-loaded masterlocking system locks all side compartments simultaneously adding convenience, time savings, and security to tools.

In addition, a reinforced workbench/bumper was specified allowing for convenient storage of long tools, and outriggers aid in stabilizing the unit while the crane is in operation.  In the cargo area, tie-down rings were installed, and the inside floor front was customized to allow for storage of a compressor.  The top compartment of the service body was reinforced to allow for a 10,000 lb. capacity crane, and the body was also equipped with a hydraulic-driven welder generator, a salvage oil system, and a hydraulic-driven air compressor.

Cleveland Brothers utilizes the spacious compartments for storage of their hand tools, special tools, testing equipment, and spare parts.  The cargo area houses engines, transmissions, differentials, and other components removed from heavy earth moving equipment.  These items are then transported to their shop for necessary repairs.

Each Reading custom service body supports a 10,000 lb. capacity crane.  The crane is used to lift engines and large components from earth moving equipment.

Cleveland Brothers is a Caterpillar Dealer.  They have been in business for 50 years and employ 400 personnel.  Their service area includes all of Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania, for a total of 32 counties.

The custom heavy duty service bodies were purchased through Crest Truck Eq. Co., Inc., an authorized Reading distributor, located in Bowmansville, PA.

Each custom service body is completely constructed of two-sided zinc-coated A-60 galvannealed steel, which provides the first layer of rust protection.  After the bodies are assembled, they receive Reading’s Lectro-Life® immersion priming process providing the most complete rust and corrosion protection in the industry.  Other standard features include double panel compartment doors for increased strength; bolt-on stainless steel pin hinges which securely hold doors in place and ensure smoother operation in all weather conditions; flange-mounted automotive rubber door seals providing weathertight protection of tools and equipment; automotive-quality, rotary locks which offer greater security to valuable tools and equipment; and a rugged understructure that is reinforced at all critical stress points providing optimum durability.  Reading service bodies are backed by a five year limited warranty.
