Reading Husky Bodies Leave Rust in the Dust

    Company Name: Kansas City Water

    Reading Products: Husky

Type of Service: Sewage Treatment Facility Maintenance

If you work out in the field for a water company, chances are staying dry is not going to be an option nor will it be high up on your list of priorities.  Your work truck, however, is a completely different story.  The more water your truck encounters the more likely it is to start rusting.  Unless of course, you happened to have the foresight to purchase a Reading body.

Sam Swearngin, Fleet Manager of Kansas City Water, drew on his previous experience with Reading bodies when he recently purchased 4 Husky bodies.

“I had good luck with Reading and trusted them because we have Reading in our fleet and had success with them,” said Swearngin.  “Reading is the best when it comes to fighting rust and rust is a big problem when you’re working in a wet environment.”

The Huskys are mounted on natural gas powered E450 Ford chassis and in addition to being powder coat painted, are outfitted with horizontal shelves in the cargo area along with extra hooks for ladders.

Kansas City Water purchased the Huskys for use as maintenance vehicles for their sewage treatment facilities.  The crew using the trucks really like them because they are able to stand up in the cargo area, something they were unable to do with their last vehicles.  They utilize the cargo area and the body compartments to store replacement parts such as valves, pumps, and pipes, ladders, and safety equipment.

The water company has 1000 employees and has a fleet of 800 vehicles, including 60 Reading bodies with various applications.

They purchased the bodies through American Equipment, an authorized Reading distributor, located in Kansas City, MO.

Standard features include construction of two-sided A60 galvannealed steel and Lectro-Life® immersion priming for complete rust protection.  Other standard features include automotive-quality rotary locks for secure protection of tools and equipment; stainless steel bolt-on hinges keeping the compartment doors operating smoothly in all weather conditions; and double paneled compartment doors offering greater durability.

Reading Standardization Offers Water Co. “No Surprises”

    Company Name: Aquarion Water Company

    Reading Products: Cranemaster

    Type of Service: Hydrant Service

When dealing with a large fleet, keeping things simple and uniform often works better than the alternative way of doing things.  Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut can attest to this.

With a fleet of over 230 trucks, including 44 Reading bodies, Aquarion’s “keep it simple” philosophy is a win-win situation for everyone involved.

According to Jim Cretella, Fleet Service Technician for Aquarion, “The ease of standardization offers no surprises.”  Cretella said that he likes that Reading is able to produce truck bodies ordered to his specs.

Aquarion recently purchased their first Reading Cranemaster and mounted it on a Peterbilt chassis.  The Cranemaster is equipped with a hydraulic compressor, a sliding top, a 3-piece, 6000-lb. hydraulic crane, Master Locking, Aluma Chock®, Grip ‘n Glide®, a custom rear bumper, and is painted powder coat white.

The body compartments are used to store parts and supplies, while the cargo area is used to hold a mounted hose reel, a hydraulic tank, and gate valve wrenches.  The vehicle will be used as a maintenance unit, servicing and repairing hydrants and other water systems.

The unit was purchased through New Haven Body, an authorized Reading distributor, in North Haven, Connecticut.

Aquarion Water Company, one of the 10 largest investor-owned water utilities in the U.S. and the largest privately-owned water utility in New England, serves 211,000 homes and businesses, in 53 communities in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Standard features of the Reading Cranemaster body include construction of two-sided A60 galvannealed steel and Lectro-Life® immersion priming for complete rust protection.  Other standard features include automotive-quality rotary locks for secure protection of tools and equipment; stainless steel bolt-on hinges keeping the compartment doors operating smoothly in all weather conditions; and double paneled compartment doors offering greater durability.

Durability & Reputation Precede Reading Name

    Company Name: Lakeland Electric

Reading Products: Custom Aerial Tower Bodies

Type of Service: Maintenance of Power Lines

A well-known adage states that you shouldn’t put the cart before the horse.  That couldn’t be more true, especially when it comes to making a claim that you’re the best at something.  Reading Body Works’ reputation as the undisputed leader in the truck body manufacturing industry would be of little use if it wasn’t backed by a quality product.  Since Reading produces a high quality product, customers agree that their reputation is solidified and well deserved.

“As long as Reading bodies are dependable and durable, I will continue to buy them,” is how Tom Blanke, Fleet Manager for Lakeland Electric, explained what made him choose a Reading body.  Reputation, convenience, compartment configuration, and a reputable sales force were all part of the equation that added up to his satisfaction with Reading.

Lakeland Electric recently purchased six Reading custom aerial tower bodies, three of which are model ZAT144DW and three are ZAT145DW bodies.  The Reading custom aerial tower bodies, which feature weathertight exterior storage compartments and an open cargo area, were mounted on International 4800 series chassis.

The trucks are being utilized in the transmission and delivery section of Lakeland Electric.  This department is responsible for the maintenance of power lines throughout their service area.

Lakeland Electric customized the aerial tower bodies in numerous ways.  Mixed features include a hot stick box, combination cab guard and boom support which protects the cab from falling trees and debris, outriggers for stability while the aerial tower is in motion, outrigger pad holders, side access stepway, stirrup steps, top and rear opening compartments, and Aluma-Chock - die-cast chock block holders that are rust and corrosion resistant.  Additional custom features include a lighting package for visibility at night and a large bumper to hold batteries for the inverters.

The body compartments are utilized for organized storage of their equipment and electrical tools.  Wire reels, ladder, shovels, and racks are stored in the open cargo area.

Standard features include construction of two-sided A60 galvannealed steel and Lectro-Life® immersion priming for complete rust protection.  Other standard features include automotive-quality rotary locks for secure protection to tools and equipment; stainless steel bolt-on hinges keeping the compartment doors operating smoothly in all weather conditions; and double paneled compartment doors offering greater durability.

Reading Helps Gas Company Provide Years of Quality Service

Company Name: Lawrence Colbert County Gas

    Reading Products: Ready Cap

    Type of Service: Maintenance Vehicle

Durability, reliability and user-friendly access are three reasons why Lawrence Colbert County Gas chose a Reading Ready Cap as their maintenance vehicle.

According to Dan Simmons, manager, they purchased a Reading Ready Cap that has lasted roughly 14 years.  “That’s why we chose a Reading Ready Cap again.  It is a reliable sturdy piece of equipment,” says Dan.  “Our original Ready Cap has outlasted four trucks, and is still in service today.  The Ready Cap works for us,” Dan explains.

The Reading Ready Cap encloses the cargo area of the pickup truck.  The cargo area is then accessible through full-width, full-height side and rear doors.  The side doors operate on pneumatic props that flip up automatically when the T-handle door latch is disengaged.  Lawrence Colbert County Gas opted for shelving in the cargo area, allowing tools and parts to be neatly stored and easy to find.

Standard Reading Ready Cap features include A60 galvannealed steel construction and Reading’s Lectro-Life® immersion priming.  In the Lectro-Life® process, the caps are immersed in a vat of electrically charged primer, adhering the paint to the metal.®This combination of steel and primer provides unbeatable rust and corrosion protection.®Other standard features include double paneled compartment doors for extra strength and rigidity, bolt-on stainless steel pin hinges allowing the compartment doors to operate smoothly in all weather conditions, and flange-mounted automotive rubber door seals that protect tools and equipment from moisture.

Lawrence Colbert County Gas is a publicly owned natural gas distributor covering parts of Lawrence and Colbert counties in Alabama.  Since 1952, they have provided service to approximately 1300 users in this area.  Lawrence Colbert County Gas is a member of the American Public Gas Association and the Alabama Natural Gas Association.  They purchased their Reading Ready Cap through Alabama Truck Body, an authorized Reading distributor located in Birmingham, AL.

    Company Name: Sandy City Corp.

    Reading Products: Custom Panel Body

Type of Service: Water Works Maintenance and Installation

Sandy City Corp. recently purchased a Reading custom panel body, model PB72-HD132AB, and chose to have it mounted on a GMC Top Kick chassis.  The body is being utilized as their maintenance vehicle.  The Reading custom panel body features weathertight exterior storage compartments with an enclosed cargo area.

Sandy City Corp. customized the Reading panel body with a P.T.O. air compressor, rear mount crane, mid body mount welder/generator, work lights, platform bumper with a “U” pipe notch, double rear receiver hitch, and an accordion style rear door.  They also customized the body with a high bottle compartment on the passenger side, four drop down doors in the floor area inside the enclosed body as additional storage compartments, and masterlocking which locks all side compartments simultaneously.  The custom panel body is well equipped for their water works maintenance and installation duties.

According to Dennis Slick, Fleet Manager, they purchased the Reading custom panel body because of the “quality and A60 galvannealed steel.  We call it the war wagon because it does everything.”  That’s obvious by the large amount of items they store in the compartments and in the enclosed cargo area.

Sandy City Corp. utilizes the body compartments for carrying metal welding and cutting supplies, air tools, hand tools, fire hydrant parts, concrete tools, road working signs, plumbing fittings, and clothing.

    Reading Part of Backbone Support

    Company Name: Tacoma Public Utilities

    Reading Products: Custom Service Body

Type of Service: Power Line Construction and Maintenance

Supporting a company’s backbone means providing the proper equipment to complete the job.  In this case, proper equipment includes the right truck with the right body configuration and the right telescopic boom.

Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) recently purchased two custom Reading bodies for use as transmission units.  According to Buzz Kodis, Fleet Design Associates, Tacoma Power, one of TPU’s subsidiaries, uses these trucks to construct new commercial-use power lines and service and maintain existing lines.  “These trucks are designed to make the linemen’s job easier,” says Kodis.

Equipped with NorStar telescopic booms, the custom Reading bodies feature weathertight exterior storage compartments and an open cargo area.  The Tacoma Power trucks are customized starting with the length - a 34' body and ending with a rear platform step bumper.  There is a heater in the front compartment complete with blower to disperse the heat to all compartments.  The heater is used to maintain dry gear in the especially rainy climate of Washington.

The vertical compartments are fit with top-hinges, allowing the compartment tops to flip-up and giving the linemen complete access to items in the compartments.  Access to the cargo area is available through a side access stairway.  There are also specially lined compartments to store hard covers and hot sticks.  The rear platform is accessible with stirrup steps and can be used as a workbench.

Tacoma Power has recently begun standardizing the trucks they use for each application.  Standardizing can save money and time especially when replacement parts are needed for a truck.

Standard Reading features include A60 galvannealed steel construction and Reading’s Lectro-Life® immersion priming.  In the Lectro-Life® process, the bodies are immersed in a vat of electrically charged primer, adhering the paint to the metal.  This combination of steel and primer provides unbeatable rust and corrosion protection.  Other standard features include flange-mounted automotive rubber doors seals providing weathertight protection to the compartments, double paneled compartment doors or extra strength and rigidity, and stainless steel pin hinges allowing the compartment doors to operate smoothly in all weather conditions.

Tacoma Public Utilities is one of the nation’s oldest municipally owned utilities, offering service since 1893.  They provide competitive, environmentally responsible electric, water and rail through their subsidiaries Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water and Tacoma Rail.  TPU’s service area includes 180 square miles and services more than 146,000 residential and commercial customers.

Aluminum Body Lightens Load, Resists Corrosion

Company Name: Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority

Reading Products: Aluminum Classic® Series Service Body

    Type of Service: Water Utility

Among his total fleet of about 125 vehicles, Arlyn Higley, Director of Maintenance for the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority, has found his 30 Reading Classic® Series service bodies to be his “workhorse” utility vehicles in both standard and customized forms.

The Authority recently upfitted a GMC 3500 one-ton chassis with the all-aluminum model of the standard series.  “We switched to all aluminum except for steel on the bumpers several years ago,” explained Higley, to take advantage of aluminum’s natural resistance to corrosion along with the lighter weight.  Since Reading’s aluminum bodies are about 45 percent lighter than steel, they allow for more payload and save fuel with less wear and tear on the chassis.  The Authority, said Higley, now has more than two dozen Reading service bodies in use.

Reading’s all-steel service bodies in the same series also provide superior corrosion resistance with two-sided, zinc-coated A-60 galvannealed steel construction and Reading’s Lectro-Life® immersion priming process.  With this, the bodies are immersed in a vat of electrically-charged primer for complete coverage of every nook and cranny.

Another Classic® Series service body was customized for the Authority last year, said Higley, for use as a garage service vehicle.  Higley had the front curbside compartment heightened to carry oxygen and acetylene tanks and chose the convenient, custom spring-loaded Master Locking System which locks all side compartments simultaneously, saving time and keeping tools secure.

An agency of the state of Florida, the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority is a water utility which maintains the water transmission and distribution system from Florida City south through the Florida Keys to Key West.  The authority services 130 miles of transmission mains and 550 miles of water lines in total.  The aqueduct was first constructed by the Navy early in the 1940’s, and in 1974 the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority purchased the system.

The spacious weathertight storage compartments on the standard service body allow Authority workers to organize and carry tools, new service and spare parts, and repair clamps to jobs for both new and existing customers.  The open cargo area is used to transport everything from a water meter and larger tools like shovels and rakes to asphalt for patching after a repair is completed.  Portable pumps and hoses are important cargo, said Higley.  “The ground water here in the Keys is two feet down, and the mains are three feet down, so when we’re making a repair we need pumps to control the water.”

The Classic® Series service body features double-paneled compartment doors with stainless steel bolt-on hinges to provide smoother operation and increased security.  Flange-mounted automotive rubber door seals insure weathertight protection to the valuable tools and equipment stored in the compartments.

The body was installed by authorized Reading distributor Rivers Body Company, Jacksonville, Florida, for Kaiser Buick-Pontiac-GMC in Deland, Florida.  Rivers’ representative in Miami keeps customers in the Keys informed on Reading’s products and innovations, said Higley.

The custom Reading Saddle-Mates were purchased through Iroquois Manufacturing Co., an authorized Reading distributor, located in Hinesburg, VT.

GPU Sends Reading Aerotech®s to the Rescue When Field Trucks are Down

Company Name: General Public Utility Energy Company

    Reading Products: Aerotech® service bodies

    Type of Service: Electric utility

GPU Energy recently purchased three Reading Aerotech® service bodies to utilize as garage service trucks.  According to Ray Kohler, Fleet Administrator, GPU Energy chose the Reading Aerotech® service bodies because of their “design and innovative features.”

The Aerotech® service body is the only aerodynamic service body completely constructed of steel (no plastic parts).  GPU Energy chose to have the bodies mounted on Chevrolet chassis and also had them customized and equipped with a power tailgate, a gas bottle reservoir, an air compressor, and a winch.

The weathertight exterior compartments are outfitted with mechanics tools and parts and will be utilized in the repair of chassis and equipment on their field trucks for the northwestern PA region.  GPU Energy’s fleet services department consists of 30 garage service trucks.

The Aerotech® service bodies were purchased through Crest Truck Eq. Co., Inc., an authorized Reading distributor located in Bowmansville, PA.

GPU, Inc. is comprised of a family of five companies.  They are an international provider of energy-related infrastructure and services serving more than 4.3 million customers around the world.  Two million are in Pennsylvania and New Jersey through it’s three electric utility subsidiaries who do business as GPU Energy.  Their service territory in this region covers a vast area of about half the land area of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  The Reading, PA-based company with it’s 9,200 employees supplies energy to customers, of which 29% are industrial, 32% commercial, 36% residential, and 3% other.

Reading Custom Service Body Aids at the Sign of Trouble

    Company Name: First Energy

Reading Products: Reading Custom Service Body

Type of Service: Diversified Energy Services

To help an electric utility repair downed power lines quickly, replace a transformer damaged by a storm, or conduct routine maintenance, a properly equipped “trouble truck” is essential.  First Energy, one of the nation’s leading diversified energy services companies, recently purchased a Reading ZAT134ADW Custom Service Body with an aerial tower for use by it’s Ohio Edison electric utility operating company.  According to Jim Callen, First Energy Fleet Specialist, the company purchased the Custom Service Body because “it offered the most competitive package, and previously purchased units have a good track record in our fleet.”

First Energy chose to mount the Custom Service Body on an International 4700 Series chassis and had it outfitted with various features.  An access stepway enables easy entry from the side of the body to the bed area.  Above the body, on the roadside, is a top and rear opening hot stick box for storage of fiberglass poles.  Above the body, on the curbside, is a top opening rubber goods box used to store sleeves needed to cover wires, insulators, and conductors.  It is important for these materials to stay dry, and Reading’s weathertight storage compartments are essential to that effect.  In addition, grip-strut material was installed on the tops of both boxes to provide a safe surface for the operator to walk on.  First Energy utilizes the remaining compartments for storage of line hardware, wire, insulators, small parts, fuses, tool belts, and other materials.

Rubber fenderettes were installed on the wheel wells for extra strength and splash protection.  The body has a platform extension and a 6" high lip.  The thru compartment in the platform extension offers convenient storage for shovels, rakes, and other long items.  In the cargo area, coils of wire can be stored along with a small transformer when needed.  In addition, a ladder box was mounted for storage of ladders.  Stainless steel locks, master locking, and four chock block holders with retainers also add to the body’s efficiency.  Reading’s spring loaded master locking system locks all side compartments simultaneously adding convenience, time savings, and security for tools and materials.

Additionally, First Energy equipped the Custom Service Body with strobe lights and spot lights for visibility when in traffic, the rear was pin-striped in red and white to make the unit more visible to traffic, and the bed was reinforced to allow for a 40 foot telescopic aerial tower essential for their trouble calls.

First Energy, headquartered in Akron, OH, is one of the nation’s leading diversified energy services holding companies.  The Custom Service Body will be used by Ohio Edison, one of its four operating companies.  Combined, First Energy’s large fleet consists of more than 3,800 vehicles, including work equipment, trailers, and light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks.  Of this total, some have been previously equipped with Reading service bodies and aluminum line bodies.

First Energy purchased their Reading Custom Service Body through Crest Truck Eq. Co., Inc., an authorized Reading distributor, in York, PA.

Each Custom Service Body is completely constructed of two-sided zinc-coated A-60 galvannealed steel, which provides the first layer of rust protection.  After the bodies are assembled, they receive Reading’s Lectro-Life® immersion priming process providing the most complete rust and corrosion protection in the industry.  Other standard features include double panel compartment doors for increased strength; bolt-on stainless steel pin hinges which securely hold doors in place and ensure smoother operation in all weather conditions; flange-mounted automotive rubber door seals providing weathertight protection of tools and equipment; automotive-quality, rotary locks which offer greater security to valuable tools and equipment; and a rugged understructure that is reinforced at all critical stress points providing optimum durability.  Reading service bodies are backed by a five year limited warranty.
