Facility Industrial Nurse

The position is responsible for conducting, administering, and coordinating medical and industrial Hygiene activities for employees and/or visitors as needed.  The Occupational Health Nurse will also collaborate with the EHS manager to identify improvement to the worker safety programs, Industrial Hygiene programs, and will provide hands on case management for workers compensation claims. The position will include on site management of worker related health issues as well as liaison with panel physicians and health care providers to ensure proper treatment, and effective return to work programs.

Essential Functions

  • Provide nursing assessment, treatment, tracking, follow-up and referrals and emergency care for health conditions, injuries and illnesses consistent with on site accident response and case management protocol.
  • Assess and refer to Employee Assistance Program (EAP), medical plan or other appropriate resources for employees with health, work, stress, emotional and/or substance abuse problems.
  • Maintain HIPAA and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance standards and records as required by law.
  • Provide comprehensive knowledge of case management, emergency first aid procedures and nursing practice, clinical skills, including guidance and counseling that meets the needs of employees.
  • Maintain general knowledge of state of the art health and medical issues to provide resource information to employees
  • Exhibit good communication, interpersonal, multi-tasking and negotiating skills with the ability to develop trust and rapport with employees, departments, and the Leadership team
  • Assist Corporate HR & Benefits to administer employee health/wellness programs such as weight loss, Diabetes counseling, high blood pressure monitoring, and flu vaccinations, Blood Drives and smoking cessation programs
  • Assist with the accident investigation program, and participate in accident investigation as needed
  • Evaluate and treat all injuries and illnesses in an efficient and professional manner within the scope of practice and consistent with clinical nursing guidelines while striving towards lowering recordable injury rates and while ensuring employees receive required treatment
  • Provide medical response assistance for onsite injuries or accidents including on call support for off shifts
  • Administer the Workman’s Comp Program to improve health and facilitate return to work, maintain OSHA Log, records/ reports and worker medical files. This may include appearance in court and coordinating restricted duty, return to work coordination with operational managers, and follow up care or treatment for employees
  • Maintain entries into JBPCO. RiskFax database
  • Contribute in the design of controls for injury prevention and health sur¬veillance related to actual and potential hazards in the work environment
  • Provide assistance to the EHS manager in implementing and managing the Respiratory Protection Program, including but not limited to respirator fit tests, pulmonary function tests, and medical clearances
  • Manage of Laser Eye Safety Program and scheduling of appointments
  • Manage HIPPA regulated employee personnel medical files and information as required
  • Schedule and Coordinate Hearing Conservation Program, follow up audio grams and counseling of employees for Standard Threshold Shifts
  • Co-lead the 1st Response team with the EHS manager and assist in training of the team members
  • Schedule, coordinate or provide Training of Emergency Response team or plant resources where functionally appropriate in items such as first aid, AED, CPR, and Medical Emergency Response
  • Develop Ergonomic Programs to included identifying critical areas for improvement and development of a robust program that addresses areas in need of improvement
  • Develop or coordinate through a 3rd Party the development of OSHA and EPA compliant functional physical job descriptions where needed and provide the information to other department as needed. This includes Pre-employment physical program
  • Maintain AED and First Aid Room Supplies
  • Manage Post Accident Drug and Alcohol Testing program, being the primary contact for outside medical professionals and channeling information as needed to HR or EHS
  • Oversee Prescription Eye Wear Program
  • Work with human resources to provide information as needed for FMLA or Short Term Disability


  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required
  • RN, COHN (Certified Occupational Health Nurse) or applicable Certification
  • Minimum 10 years experience as an occupational health professional in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA Injury Reporting and IH Programs
  • In-depth knowledge of state and federal regulatory and compliance issues (OSHA, Worker's Comp, Blood Borne Pathogens, etc.)
  • Current Registered nurse license required for the Stat of PA, Bachelors degree in Nursing or equivalent education, license in occupational health nursing preferred
  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • Must be an independent performer
  • Comfortable working autonomously
  • Must keep current within the industrial medicine field
  • Strong desire and enthusiasm for understanding employee needs
  • Must be detail oriented, have ability to multitask and possess great interper¬sonal skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Computer Skills: Functional to perform duties as needed in Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Must be skilled in case management within a manufacturing environment
